About
We are delighted to share that Awdhesh Tamrakar has been awarded the PAIR 2025 residency at Cité internationale des arts, Paris, in partnership with Institut Francais Paris and Institut Francais in India.
His practice is deeply informed by his personal and ancestral connection to brass and copper—materials that define the identity of the Thathera craft community. The term Tamrakar, derived from Tamra (copper) and Kar (craftsman), reflects the intrinsic link between material and maker. In contemporary discourse, materials are often recontextualized as a conceptual framework for exploring social, historical, and ecological concerns. His approach aligns with this expanded field of craft, where material serves as both a physical medium and a metaphor for cultural continuity and transformation.
During this residency he aims to explore the movement and reinterpretation of Indian brass and copper utensils in French museum and craft contexts, tracing their material, cultural, and historical narratives.
